Meningitis information

Hib

Hib meningitis is caused by the bacterium Haemophilus influenzae type b. This type of meningitis is usually seen in babies and children under the age of four.

The introduction of a Hib vaccine in the UK and Ireland in 1992 has significantly reduced the number of cases and this type of meningitis is now rarely seen.

For more information on Hib meningitis, please call our 24-hour freephone helpline on 0800 028 18 28 (UK) or 1800 523 196 (Ireland).
